How to Pick the Best Halloween Jack-o-Lantern for Carving
It’s one thing to know where to get your pumpkin in Kansas City; it’s another to know how to pick one that’s best suited for carving into a Jack-o-Lantern. Here are 11 u-pick pumpkin tips to get you started.
- Choose a pumpkin with a firm rind and no visible signs of damage (soft spots or holes).
- Make sure the stem is hard and not loosening from the gourd.
- Cut the stem as far up the vine as possible to ensure your pumpkin lasts till Halloween.
- Don’t carry the pumpkin by the stem!
- It should be fairly even all the way around, with a flat base.
- Don’t worry about bumps or warts—they give the pumpkin character!
- Pick a pumpkin with a deep orange color, and avoid any that are slightly yellow or pale orange.
- Ask the farmer or employee if they grow pumpkin species like the Atlantic Giant or Cronus, which make for excellent Jack-o-Lanterns.
- Protect your pumpkin during transportation by lining your vehicle’s cargo area, trunk, or bed with thick blankets, cardboard, or a cargo management solution.
- Thicken the skin by storing the pumpkin in a warm, humid area for several days prior to carving.
- Before you carve your Halloween pumpkin, wash it with a solution of bleach (1 Tbsp) and distilled water (1 gallon) to kill bacteria and fungus.
Now, get to carving!
